Architectural decorative materials in the Ly and Tran Dynasties in 11th -14th centuries (Part 2)

By the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, many excavations on the ancient citadel of Thang Long had been deployed. Many objects made of ceramic and terra-cotta were discovered and sent to the Louis Finot Museum, now the Vietnam National Museum of History. Many are inscribed with the place of origin as Quan Ngua, Ngoc Ha, Van Phuc, Huu Tiep, Kim Ma, Cong Vi, Lieu Giai and bearing the characteristics of Ly-Tran Dynasties. Many objects of which have been registered as the national treasures and now are on display at the permanent exhibition system of the VNMH Museum.

Dong Son Culture is one of three well-known archaeological cultures that contributed to form the first administrative state of Vietnam. The first site was accidentally discovered in 1924 at Dong Son village (Thanh Hoa province). In 1934, R. Heine-Geldern, an archaeologist, proposed to take a name of Dong Son Culture.

Results on the excavations on the Phu Truong firing kiln relic in Ham Thuan Bac, Binh Thuan province.

Since 2005, on the construction site of Phu Truong (Ham Thuan Bac – Binh Thuan), people have found a number of pieces of ceramic and terra-cotta tiles. Later, the Binh Thuan Museum has made a test and analysis to show that this site used to be an area for ceramics kiln dating back 10th -11th centuries and of Champa people.

Vietnamese - Cambodian relationship in the 20th century through objects and materials preserved in VNMH

Vietnam and Cambodia have a long neighboring relationship, support each other in fighting, and protect country for independence. In history, the diplomatic relationship between the two countries is not always smooth but they are very close, together sharing difficulties and happiness in a solidarity base. This relation can be found through many objects and materials preserved and displayed in Vietnam National Museum of History.

From unofficial history to archaeological reality

The Dong Son Culture was first discovered in the province of Thanh Hoa in 1924 and the term of “Dong Son Culture” became officially in use in 1934. Nevertheless, several relics of the Dong Son Culture had been known earlier by many Vietnamese.
