In the history of Vietnam, the Ho dynasty lasted for a short period. In 1400, Ho Quy Ly acceded to the throne and renamed the country Dai Ngu and the royal title of Thanh Nguyen, and settled in the Western Citadel (Thanh Hoa province). Though the Ho dynasty lasted for only seven years, with the reign of two kings, Ho Quy Ly and Ho Han Thuong, certain renovations in the economy, culture, and education were achieved: policies on restriction of land and slaves, the issuance of paper notes, praise of Confucianism, development of Nom characters, and expansion of schools. The military was given special attention. The Western Citadel (Vinh Loc, Thanh Hoa province) is considered the most unique citadel in Southeast Asia and was acknowledged World Cultural Heritage in 2011 by UNESCO.
