This exhibition area presents objects, photographs and documents relating to the struggles for independence of the Vietnamese people, starting with the first shot fired by the French colonial invaders in 1858, and ending with the victory of the General Uprising of the Vietnamese people in August 1945. Organized chronologically from Gallery 1 to Gallery 9, the exhibition helps visitors to understand key elements of our history: the invasion and occupation of Vietnam by the French colonizers; patriotic movements against French colonial regime by the Vietnamese people at the end of the 19th century and in early 20th century; the foundation of the Vietnamese Communist Party and its role in leading the struggle for independence through revolutionary uprisings 1930-1931, 1936-1939, 1939-1945; the General Uprising of August 1945 and the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam – the first independent and democratic state in Southeast Asia.
